Since joining UBC in 2014, he has started a laboratory investigating applications of technology in head and neck reconstructive surgery. With significant collaboration from the Biomedical and Computer Engineering departments at UBC, his lab has successfully developed an in-house virtual surgical planning workflow with 3D-printed cutting guides for upper and lower jaw reconstruction and has integrated the technology into clinical practice since 2017. He also initiated the first Trans-oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) Program in Western Canada in 2014 and served as the site Principal Investigator for the randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) ORATOR from 2014 to 2017.

He is passionate about the application of technology to improve the surgical management and clinical outcomes of head and neck oncology patients. His current research projects include investigating the benefits of virtual surgical planning through an RCT, creating a virtual platform for interdisciplinary collaboration in head and neck cancer treatment, applications of ultrasound in TORS, and incorporating machine learning in medicine to improve diagnostics and treatment.
